A whole school approach to equality can increase attainment, improve behaviour and ensure that everyone feels safe and able to succeed. Building inclusion should not be an add on. A diversity focus is not something that should be extra but rather something that is part of the fabric of every educational setting.
Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion requires commitment from everybody but failing to build it into the fabric of the school leaves young people exposed to discrimination and exclusion, it can also lead to a lack of self-esteem, low confidence and impact upon their sense of belonging and academic achievement.
Diversity Mark schools have been committed to building inclusive settings and bringing diverse and global perspectives into education for many years. These recent global events provide a stark reminder of why our work across education from early years, to Schools and Colleges is so important. We hope these events remind all our partners, why membership of our national network is not just a tick box exercise but the start of transformation and change in education.
Getting equality right can help reduce other pressures and improve the education environment for everyone. The Diversity Mark is a tool to help Schools plan and deliver an inclusive curriculum in ways that can help to bring about positive change and transform attitudes by creating a global perspective, raising awareness and developing teaching practice and knowledge and understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion.
